Premature deliveries and birth injuries

Childbirth is often a miraculous occasion for mothers in Alton. But when there are issues that result in premature delivery, many new mothers find themselves upset and frustrated about their babies' conditions. Babies who are born sooner than 37 weeks are premature because they have less time to develop. The earlier babies are born, the more health complications and serious injuries they may have. Mothers should take some time to learn how premature delivery and birth injuries can occur.

What could happen if a doctor delays your C-section?

C-sections are necessary in many pregnancies for reasons that include a breech infant, multiple babies, preeclampsia and uterine ruptures. Often, the procedures go well, with the mother and baby (or babies) in good health afterward. Sometimes, though, a doctor does not make the C-section decision as early as he or she should, and problems can occur. Here is a look at some of the potential issues that might arise with the baby.

Did a medical mistake cause a brachial plexus injury to your baby?

It is normal for the months leading up to the birth of a child to be nerve-wracking. Whether you are about to become a parent for the first time, or the fifth time, there are always some fears when it comes to delivery. To try to combat these fears, parents often put their full and complete trust in their delivery team. This is why it's particularly heartbreaking when this medical team makes a mistake that leads to a birth injury.

Factors that increase the risk of birth trauma

Getting ready for the birth of a baby is one of the most exciting times in the life of a new mother or father. While expectant parents can have all the baby supplies ready and the hospital bag packed, nothing can prepare them for the stress and grief that can occur in the delivery room. Birth trauma happens to relatively few newborns, with Medscape reporting that only six to eight infants will be injured for every 1,000 babies born, but those families that do experience this can be physically and emotionally damaged for life.

How lack of oxygen leads to cerebral palsy

One of the most common birth-related injuries that new mothers wind up facing in their infants is cerebral palsy. This developmental condition has been documented and studied in medical literature for over 150 years, during which time the debate over the role of birth asphyxia as its cause has continued. While there have been many theories about how and why it plays a role over the years, medical science now realizes that oxygen deprivation during birth is one of several causes of cerebral palsy.

Maternal Mortality Rates Have Spiked In The U.S. ...Has Malpractice, Too?

Since 1990, worldwide maternal mortality rates have decreased by nearly 50 percent. Within the United States, however, statistics gathered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that maternal mortality rates have doubled in the same time period. This is an unusual discrepancy-and one that researchers have yet to fully explain.

Surgical errors are more widespread than many realize

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has released a Patient Safety Primer about the issue of "wrong-site, wrong-procedure, wrong-patient errors" (so-called "WSPEs") to raise awareness for providers and patients alike. A previous study published in the Archives of Surgery that analyzed both voluntary and mandatory healthcare facility reporting data shows that as many as 2700 WSPEs happen each year in a variety of surgical settings (including inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory care and interventional radiology).
