Birth injuries can occur for a variety of reasons

Sometimes babies struggle to come into this world safely. The journey through the birth canal can be dangerous. Without close monitoring, many babies suffer injuries.

Birth injuries can happen for many reasons. Some common causes of difficult births that may result in injuries include:

  • The baby being particularly large
  • Cephalopelvic disproportion, where the mother's pelvis is not shaped or sized correctly to give birth to the child
  • Prematurity, which causes some infants to be more fragile
  • Prolonged labor, which puts extra pressure on a child
  • Breech delivery

With difficult births, it's important that the infants and their mothers are monitored closely. If a mother, for example, does not have a pelvis that is wide enough to allow for a vaginal delivery, a C-section may be needed to safely deliver the child.

What are some common birth injuries?

These include:

  • Bruising or marks from the use of forceps
  • Brachial palsy, which happens when the nerves that supply the hands and arms are injured, usually because of shoulder dystocia
  • Fractures, which can happen when there is a breech delivery or if there's trouble delivering the baby's shoulder
  • Facial paralysis, which may occur if the nerves of the face are damaged during delivery

In many cases, these injuries will eventually heal. However, some children may require surgery or other types of medical treatment as they get older. If your child suffers a birth injury as a result of poor monitoring or care by medical professionals, you may be in a position to file a medical malpractice claim. An experienced attorney can provide guidance and help.
