What can you do if you're the victim of surgical errors?

Surgical errors, on the whole, should never take place. While there might be complications during surgeries, an error is different. Errors are obvious mistakes that surgeons or their teams make during an operation. They can be anything from not stitching a wound correctly to failing to operate on the correct body part.

There is no reason that a surgical error should happen. Patients go through pre-operative appointments, meet with nurses and even talk to the surgeon before surgery in many scheduled surgery cases. Despite all those checks and balances, some surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses still make errors.

What should you do if you've been a victim of a surgical error?

If you are the victim of a surgical error, it's important to speak up. Initially, you may want to talk to the person who caused a problem or made a mistake and find out exactly what happened. If they won't talk about the situation or if the hospital or provider has tried to cover up the error, you may want to take your case to your attorney and have another medical professional review it to show what errors took place, when they took place and why.

Victims of surgical errors should take the time to seek help. It's not fair to put your life in the hands of another party and for them to make mistakes that should have been easily avoided. You put your trust into your medical provider, and the least they can do is to perform a surgery or operation with all the right knowledge and techniques.

John J. Hopkins: From Working Iron To
Representing Those Who Work

ALTON —Like any successful trial lawyer, John Hopkins knows the importance of preparation. But he usually doesn’t write out the questions he plans to ask witnesses in depositions or in court.

View Article “I like to react to what the witness is saying—not only what they’re saying, but how they’re saying it,” Hopkins says.
