Cerebral palsy can change a young life forever

Any new parent or caring relative would seize up in fear to hear an obstetrician say there has been a problem. The birth of a child is one of the most anticipated events for a family, and it can be stressful enough when everything goes as planned. It can feel unimaginable to understand that a new child's life will never be as expected.

Many minor birth injuries happen when the strain of the young body's journey through the birth canal causes bruises or abrasions. Most of these heal over time. Serious injuries, however, can result from the lack of oxygen to a baby in the crucial moments after his or her emergence.

Cerebral palsy, often referred to as CP, is a disorder of the central nervous system. It is often caused by damage to the brain just before or during birth. Children with CP often show abnormalities in their nervous function because the brain cannot properly govern movement or function. Other symptoms include an acid imbalance in the blood of the umbilical cord, problems with organ function, low reflex response and low heart rate.

Some cases of CP are caused by unknown factors, but most are connected to a delay in the baby's delivery. Some causes happen before delivery entirely, such as if the fetus suffers a stroke or an infection. Some genetic conditions or physical problems with the fetal brain may also be the cause.

When a birth injury is the cause of CP, parents may consider a lawsuit to claim the financial help required for prolonged medical care and other needs that may arise. An attorney can assist with this.
