Poor staffing can lead to nursing home neglect

Nursing home neglect is something that families must constantly be on the lookout for. The elderly may not be able to assert themselves and point out to the appropriate people that they're being treated. Therefore, it's often up to loved ones to notice when they're not being treated as they should be.

One common issue with nursing homes is a lack of appropriate staffing. When a facility has too few staff members, it's far too easy for the people who live there to go without the care they need. One thing you can ask yourself each time you visit a loved one is how well-staffed the nursing home is and if the staffing seems appropriate based on the number of residents.

For example, if the nursing home has a staffing ratio of 1 to 5, with a single nurse being responsible for the care of five patients each shift, then you'd expect them to have a reasonable amount of time to tend to the needs of each patient and to deal with any emergencies. On the other hand, if you've recently noticed nurses leaving and that the ratio has dropped to 1 to 15, you can see how there would be a higher chance of injuries, abuse or neglect.

Neglect isn't always intentional

However, it is almost always harmful. Whether it leads to over- or undermedicating patients, dehydration, bedsores or other issues, your loved one deserves better. Our site has more on what you should do if you believe your loved one is being neglected or suffering abuse in a nursing home.

John J. Hopkins: From Working Iron To
Representing Those Who Work

ALTON —Like any successful trial lawyer, John Hopkins knows the importance of preparation. But he usually doesn’t write out the questions he plans to ask witnesses in depositions or in court.

View Article “I like to react to what the witness is saying—not only what they’re saying, but how they’re saying it,” Hopkins says.
