You're the first line of defense against nursing home abuse

Nursing homes should be places where the elderly are cared for and safe. They should not have to worry about people taking advantage of them or neglecting their care. Sadly, nursing homes aren't always the places that they should be, and the elderly are often the ones who suffer.

The elderly may be hurt by neglect, abuse or negligence. Whether it's mistakes that are made, physical abuse that becomes commonplace or complete negligence on the part of the medical providers, there is no excuse. The elderly are vulnerable, and they deserve the respect of those around them.

How can you be sure your loved one isn't a victim of abuse?

The best way for you to be sure is to stay active in your loved one's life. It's easy to reduce your visits when you know they're being cared for, but it's best if you don't stay away too much. Try to visit regularly and at different times, so you are always checking on different aspects of your loved one's care.

Failing to monitor your loved one's care can mean that it's harder to see when things go wrong. For example, if you visit daily, you're more likely to notice a slow decline in health or to notice a lack of nursing care during your visits. If you don't visit often, you may not be sure what a typical day is like in the facility.

Overall, you can catch cases of abuse, neglect or negligence, but you need to watch for them.

John J. Hopkins: From Working Iron To
Representing Those Who Work

ALTON —Like any successful trial lawyer, John Hopkins knows the importance of preparation. But he usually doesn’t write out the questions he plans to ask witnesses in depositions or in court.

View Article “I like to react to what the witness is saying—not only what they’re saying, but how they’re saying it,” Hopkins says.
