Boating season: 3 tips to keep you safe

Spring is here, and summer is just around the corner. That means it's a time when more people are heading out on the water, enjoying their time boating.

Boating can be a lot of fun for everyone who goes together, but it can also result in some serious injuries or deaths if the people on board aren't safe. Here are three things to do to make your next outing safer.

1. Get to know the weather ahead of time

To start with, make sure you have a weather radio and know what weather conditions to expect. The last thing anyone wants is for your boat to capsize or for you to get stranded because of the weather conditions. Sudden drops in temperature, hail and other weather hazards pose a real threat to your health.

2. Avoiding drinking on board

While alcohol can be had by passengers, it's best to avoid alcohol when you're on the water. When alcohol is involved, the risk of a boating accident doubles. Reduce your risk and avoid drinking.

3. Use life jackets

Finally, any time your boat is in motion, it's smart to use life jackets. If you are stopped, those who are swimming or walking around the boat may not need life jackets, but it's best to wear them as much as possible. If you do get involved in a crash or the boat sinks, life jackets could make a difference in how many people get to shore safely.

These are three tips for a safer boating season. Monitor your surroundings, use life jackets and avoid alcohol, so you can stay safe.

John J. Hopkins: From Working Iron To
Representing Those Who Work

ALTON —Like any successful trial lawyer, John Hopkins knows the importance of preparation. But he usually doesn’t write out the questions he plans to ask witnesses in depositions or in court.

View Article “I like to react to what the witness is saying—not only what they’re saying, but how they’re saying it,” Hopkins says.
