Don't forget about mental health in your personal injury claim

Injuries do more than hurt you physically. They cause a mental strain, too. Though you're focused on getting better, the reality is that the stress of such a sudden change in your life can have real mental health-related consequences.

It's a good idea for anyone who has suffered a serious injury or been involved in a traumatic incident to have someone talk to them about their mental health. There are a few different conditions people could develop due to their injuries and the stress placed on them. These include:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Anxiety
  • Depression

On top of these mental health conditions, there are additional symptoms that may coincide with them such as behavior changes, irrational behavior, anger or sadness. Fatigue, as well as mental fatigue, can be a commonality between injury victims.

What can you do to help yourself after a serious injury?

The physical injuries you've suffered are significant, and that can lead you feeling left out, depressed, anxious or frustrated. It's a good idea to set up an appointment to talk to someone about how you feel emotionally so that you can get the psychological support you need, too. Physical injuries are draining, but mental injuries can strain the body as well.

Your personal injury claim can include compensation for mental health care after a collision. It's ok not to feel ok after a crash, and you deserve all the medical treatments you need to get back to feeling like yourself. Our site has more on what you can expect if you want to pursue a claim against the party who harmed you.

John J. Hopkins: From Working Iron To
Representing Those Who Work

ALTON —Like any successful trial lawyer, John Hopkins knows the importance of preparation. But he usually doesn’t write out the questions he plans to ask witnesses in depositions or in court.

View Article “I like to react to what the witness is saying—not only what they’re saying, but how they’re saying it,” Hopkins says.
