Signs of malnutrition in a nursing home

The elderly have an especially high risk of suffering from malnutrition because they often have limited mobility. They may not have a chance to pick out their own food and they become dependent on others. For instance, an elderly person living in a nursing home must be given a healthy, balance diet, and he or she must get enough food every day. Caretakers hold the residents' well-being in their hands since they provide all food and nourishment.

Are you worried that your loved one is not getting proper food at a nursing home? Some symptoms of malnutrition that you should watch out for include:

  • Acting uninterested in food, as if he or she simply does not want to eat
  • Getting sick more often due to a lack of vitamins and minerals
  • Not healing as quickly from injuries
  • Having trouble concentrating and focusing on the task at hand
  • Feeling cold all of the time
  • Becoming irritable, even over minor issues
  • Feeling tired all of the time and sleeping too much
  • Losing body weight, including both muscle mass and fat
  • Struggling with depression and related symptoms
  • Having skin that has turned pale and thin
  • Losing hair at an accelerated rate, which may fall out easily and in clumps
  • Having trouble breathing
  • Having eyes that appear sunken in and cheeks that look hollow

It is very important to look for signs of malnutrition before they get too serious, as dietary changes can work wonders for the elderly. If you think that your loved one has been neglected and ignored, make sure you know what legal steps you can take.

John J. Hopkins: From Working Iron To
Representing Those Who Work

ALTON —Like any successful trial lawyer, John Hopkins knows the importance of preparation. But he usually doesn’t write out the questions he plans to ask witnesses in depositions or in court.

View Article “I like to react to what the witness is saying—not only what they’re saying, but how they’re saying it,” Hopkins says.
