The No. 1 complaint in nursing homes

Far too many nursing home residents have to deal with neglect on a daily basis. According to one report, the issue they complain about more than anything else is that the staff members not responding when they push the call button. Residents need assistance and do not get it.

There is also a related issue, which is long call response times. What if a staff member shows up after a half an hour or an hour? Is that fast enough, or is that still neglect?

Since statistics on call response times are difficult to find, one company did its own study. What they found is that the average response time was around eight minutes. Of course, since this is an average, many residents experienced shorter or longer real-world responses. However, that average is the time frame that a resident can expect.

By that measurement, anything over 10 minutes is clearly taking too long. In fact, for the top 10 percent of nursing homes, the call response times are down to two minutes. Not everyone can hit that mark, but it is possible.

Factors that can delay a response include not having enough workers on staff at the same time or having numerous call buttons go off at once. A failure to respond does not mean that the staff isn't working, but it does means that a vulnerable elderly person does not get prompt assistance.

If you think that your loved one is being neglected and ignored in a nursing home or other care facility, make sure you know what legal options you have.

John J. Hopkins: From Working Iron To
Representing Those Who Work

ALTON —Like any successful trial lawyer, John Hopkins knows the importance of preparation. But he usually doesn’t write out the questions he plans to ask witnesses in depositions or in court.

View Article “I like to react to what the witness is saying—not only what they’re saying, but how they’re saying it,” Hopkins says.
