Pickup trucks pose the greatest danger to pedestrians

Any pedestrian accident is potentially fatal. Even at low speeds, unprotected pedestrians can be seriously injured or killed. The odds of death climb dramatically as that speed increases.

What about the type of car that hits those pedestrians? Could the style of vehicle play a role?

It does. According to one expert, the odds that a pedestrian will pass away as the result of a crash are two or three times higher if that person gets hit by an SUV or a pickup truck, compared to the odds of death if the person is hit by a traditional passenger car.

This is not to diminish the danger of cars. Someone who gets hit by a coupe or a sedan could still be in grave danger. However, the statistics show that trucks and SUVs increase the level of risk even more.

The reason, as you may suspect, is the size of the vehicle. Trucks and SUVs tend to be higher. This means that the person's head and upper body could take most of the impact, whereas the legs and core may absorb the impact from a sedan.

It is also worth noting that many pickup trucks have body-on-frame designs. This means that the rigid frame sits in place with the passenger compartment firmly bolted to it. That design makes a pickup trucker stiffer than a car, which some experts believe can increase the odds of a fatality in an accident.

Have you lost a loved one in a pedestrian accident? No matter what type of vehicle was involved, it is very important for you to know all of your legal rights.

John J. Hopkins: From Working Iron To
Representing Those Who Work

ALTON —Like any successful trial lawyer, John Hopkins knows the importance of preparation. But he usually doesn’t write out the questions he plans to ask witnesses in depositions or in court.

View Article “I like to react to what the witness is saying—not only what they’re saying, but how they’re saying it,” Hopkins says.
