Cerebral palsy is different for everyone

If you think your child may have cerebral palsy, it can help to examine the symptoms found in others with this disorder. However, it is also important to remember that these symptoms are different for everyone.

For example, cerebral palsy can lead to rigidity in the limbs. This can make it hard for people to walk and it can cause other issues with common motor skills. You may notice it if your young child does not seem to be developing at the same rate as his or her peers. However, cerebral palsy can also lead to a loose "floppiness" of the limbs, as well. These seem like polar opposites, but both cause issues with motor skills and both come from the same disorder.

Or, perhaps your child does not seem to have the same intellectual abilities as others of the same age. He or she struggles to talk, walk, learn new skills or even respond to outside stimulus. Cerebral palsy can cause all of these issues, and it often does. However, someone could have the disease without showing any signs of this level of intellectual impairment. Instead, that person's impairments may be more physical. Again, this does not mean they do not have the same disorder.

The brain is very complex. The way it responds to injury is different for everyone, which means you may not always see the signs that you expect to see.

If you do think your child has a serious birth injury like cerebral palsy, it can be life-changing. Make sure you fully understand all of your legal options to seek out compensation.

John J. Hopkins: From Working Iron To
Representing Those Who Work

ALTON —Like any successful trial lawyer, John Hopkins knows the importance of preparation. But he usually doesn’t write out the questions he plans to ask witnesses in depositions or in court.

View Article “I like to react to what the witness is saying—not only what they’re saying, but how they’re saying it,” Hopkins says.
